Your Guide to FASD Assessment

Our multi-disciplinary team of developmental paediatricians, FASD diagnostic coordinators, speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists and psychologists will provide a caring, detailed assessment of your child. They will also recommend follow-up and next steps after assessment.

What is Involved in an FASD Assessment?

Referrals to the Manitoba FASD Network are accepted from families, physicians, Child and Family Services, schools, health care professionals, and community agencies.

The referral is reviewed by the FASD Diagnostic Coordinator, who will contact the family to discuss. Caregivers and the school will complete information forms about the child’s strengths and challenges. The coordinator can help. This information helps to determine what the assessment plan will be for your child.

An assessment may require visits with a psychologist, speech language pathologist and an occupational therapist. We try to schedule these close to your home.

After these assessments, you’ll meet with the doctor and coordinator at your closest clinic. The doctor will talk with you about your current concerns, child’s history, feelings, school experiences, friends and daily activities. They may complete a physical and developmental assessment, such as language skills, problem solving and motor skills.

Recommendations Will be Made After Assessment

These assessments will be reviewed and discussed with you, and recommendations and referrals will be made to benefit your child.
